Nice, way to keep it old skool. Anyways, you've probably tried compatibility mode already but if not, do this:
1.Right Click the Rainbow Six Icon and try "Run as Administrator"

If not move on:
2.Right Click on the Rainbow Six Icon and click Properties
4.Go to the Compatibility tab
5.Try XP first, Then 2000, then 98, trying between each switch.

If not move on:
6.You could also try adding a check to the box next to "run in 640x480 screen resolution"

If not, well I'd try looking online for your specific issue. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I lost my disk years ago.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, my laptop runs on Windows Vista Home Premium, so that's why I think it is a compatibility issue...

Hey man, you said you have, or at least did have the original Rainbow Six for PC, correct? Well, I recently dug up my old copy of the original Rainbow Six, as well as Rainbow Six: Eagle Watch mission pack. I used to play on Windows XP, but when today I installed it on my laptop, it does not work. I can open the game, and it only gets as far as the intro game videos. As soon as the intro videos are done, it always closes both games at the exact same point. I can't even get to the main menu. So, I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to please help me fix this compatibility issue! (At least i think it is)
