This year I had to make a choice. Stick with intel’s proven and useful Dual Core arcitechure, or move it on up to a quad core… The descision ultimately wasn’t hard.

With the slew of games now supporting multiple cores, but most still shuning anything more than two, and with the core 2 duo’s AMAZING overclocking capabilities, the core 2 quad’s offered little competition. Now, I might regret this the next time I burn a DVD and it takes over an hour to transcode, but when I’m flying through UT 3 with my 4.2Ghz Dual Core processor, I think I’ll forgive myself.

The only Issue then was which model. Processors are notoriously known for having huge price jumps bewteen processor speeds, and I didn’t want to break my budget on one chip. I initially settled on the E8400 as my processor of choice. Featuring low power consuming wolfdale cores and coming stock at 3.oGhz, It seemed like a good bet.

The Intel E8500 Blazing Fast.

The Intel E8500 Blazing Fast.

However, At the very last second before ordering, I found that the E8500 (wolfdale @ 3.16) was only $20 more. While I typically don’t like to feed manufacure egos, and would rather have gotten the extra .16 through overclocking, I am sure that this purchuse  (and liquid cooling) is what enabled me to hit 4.2Ghz.

This year choosing a new case was the second most important decision I had to make (and arguably the hardest). After Deciding to stick with a dual core processor, instead of moving up to a quad-core, the next decision shaped everything else about my computer. From It’s codename, Panther, to it’s capabilities and features.

Plain Jane? more like Raw Pain!.. For noobs I mean.

Plain Jane? more like Raw Pain!.. For noobs I mean.

Overall, though I did “settle” on a rather plain old black looking case, there were numerous features which stood out to me as both important and simply bad-ass.

  1. Antec is a solid company, and this is a solid case. Not only is the thing made of steel, instead of the lighter cheaper aluminum used in most cases, but the 900 has proven it’s over years of in the field testing.
  2. It has a much more “mature” look than my current case, (The Emperor on antec cases:”I find your lack of dragons disturbing”) while still maintaining the clear side panel and eye catching LED fans I like.
  3. According to newegg.com it has ports on the back for a liquid cooling system, nice since that’s what I plan on using.
  4. It’s big enough to hold two graphics cards (Hopefully Radeaon HD 3870′s) But still small enough to be managable.
  5. IT HAS A FRICKIN 200mm EXHAUST FAN ON TOP! < self explanatory.

And so it is, that with a swift buy off a well-known auction site, my antec 900 case is in the mail, soon arriving at my doorstep, and Operation New PC ’09 is in full swing!

Is offering up older games in a seemingly very steam-like fashion.

So far their catalog is pretty small, but since their only in beta, can you really blame them? Anyways they have classics like Fallout 1&2 and unreal 1&2 (and unreal tournament gold) which everyone should own.

personally, I’m not yet confident in buying too much from them. I mean, with the way law suits are thrown around, it’s likely only a matter of time before they come under fire.  Still if they manage to survive, it’ll be a welcome addition to my default installation package when I’m setting up my next PC.

You can also wait longingly for your favorite games by following them on twitter: twitter.com/gogcom

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six® Vegas 2 on Steam.

vegas 2

It’s now $9.99 or 50% off until january 20th (it’s the current weekend deal) I’m installing the game now and will update this post to review status once I’ve gone hands on.

I’ve gotta say it’s looking good though. I was a wicked fan of the original Rainbow Six game, and it’s expansion rainbow Six: Eagle Watch, but that was way before I had a high-speed connection, and even before I had a “graphics card”, so as long as Vegas 2 can successfully carry the mantle of it’s fore-fathers, I see no issues and am issueing a strict “GO! GO! GO!” (a little CT humor) on buying this game.

Will edit once the verdict is in!

Edit: Sorry I couldn’t get back to you guys on this game sooner… I was addicted! while I at first wasn’t sure the game was for me, seemed like a lot of trouble (not killing hostages, defusing bombs, etc.) once I realized what terrorist hunt was, I was elated! you can pit yourself against a house full of enemies and just go nuts! and terorist hunt adds to your total xp, which is used to unlock new guns and equipment… man, this games deffinitly worth ten bucks, and it’s probably worth the twenty it is when it’s not on sale. For now though, only get this game if your not playing anything else.

Also, since I happend to be on my vista install when I bought the game, I’m running it on vista, and though the system requirements for vista are kind of high, 2048MB RAM Radeon HD 3850 and above, I don’t meet either of those (1.5GB’s RAM Radeon 3650) and it runs flawlessly on high settings.

Peace, I’m gonna go take down some tango’s!

It’s was early yesterday morning, under the influence of far too many cups of Adagio’s Finest Tea, that I gave into a vice I’d sworn against since it’s very inception into american culture. That of Dance Dance Revolution.

Show me your moves!.. ehh don't.

Show me your moves!.. ehh don't.

While most see this game as simply a great way to break the ice at parties, or as something to do alone, in your house, with the shades drawn tight, I saw something darker. I could see where those four brightly colored arrows on the mat were pointing: The death of the arcade game.

It is in my opinion that in hindsight we will all look back upon Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), as the hitman of arcades. Yet it might be the games inital appeal, to groups outside the arcade circuit, which is to blame. Luring the untapped masses to arcades is a hard feat, and this game did it well, potientally better than any other game in history, which is way I hold it accountable. luring in the unsuspecting gamers was exactly what the starving arcade industry was looking for when DDR debuted, and so the machine sold like hot-cakes. where the plan went sour though, was when DDR made the jump to consoles.

Never before could people be quite so interactive with their video game. Sure you could tell earthbound your favorite food, and yeah hello pikachu was cute (maybe). But this game got gamers off the couch! it engages an entirely different set of their limbs! theres simply no competition (or rather wasn’t) for the appeal of DDR. So when it was announced that DDR would be made available to the home market, who could pass it up? Me for one. I saw what DDR had done. Rather than sticking to the arcades that had made it the most popular game in the industry, DDR sold out it’s adopted home and, like the prostituc that it is, moved to consoles, where the money is.

DDR used the arcades as a cheap marketing ploy and then left them out in the cold when they needed it most. For that, I will never forgive the game. Yet, though being a gamer is a subjective art, and my opinion of games is perhaps my most valuable asset, a through and honest opinion cannot be formed on presumption alone. Yesterday, 01/15/09, after years of avoiding and procrasting, I tried it, and god damn… It’s fun. I couldn’t believe how rapidilly I took to the overwhelmingly shitty music, and how dispite my obvious inability to move my body, I kept playing… for hours. lame I know, but I did. And though I am not as bad as some of my “friends” (one kid had a steel DDR mat flown in from japan.) I am now a fan of the game.

BUT MISTAKE ME NOT! This game should forever be remembered as the prostitute which singlehandly slaughter the arcade industry… Along with time crisis… but thats another day.

ugh, now thats an ugly bitch

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl on Steam is 75% off for the weekend, making it only $4.99. I picked up my copy right away, having heard rumors the game is good. I’ll append this post once it finishes installing and give you more details.

EDIT: Deffinitly worth the five bucks, the game is something like Diablo (the Game) meets… Black (the game)… or something, if anyone even gets both of those references. So, if you’ve got steam, and if you don’t go get it, it’s free, this is deffinitly a game to get. Simple, fun, complex, challanging, engrosing… All words I’d use to describe this game.

One thing that any FPS fan should love for christmas:

Weighted Companion Cube Plush

Direct from the steam shop, this thing is pretty chill. Plus the best part of portal was the humor anyways. Unfortunetly it is on the pricey side, so ask for it for christmas.

The Team Fortress 2 team has finally released a new blog update, and it happens to be in tandem to a new game update as well. Well actually a slew of new game updates:

We’ve been pretty quiet lately, but thankfully, that’s about to end. In the next few days we’ll have an update out that has a couple of new features for the Engineer and Spy, and a variety of other smaller fixes.

For more details: Hey good job, there, hardhat
But my favorite thing has gotta be the additional levels added to dispensers and teleporters. I love the engineer class.

As I post this, dear gamers, we stand poised in the middle of an onslaught of new releases in the video game world. While I would normally hail this as a good, great, even grand thing, I must fear the worst…

In a rush to get out their products for a christmas, nigh black-friday release, I’m sure some companies have fallen through on throughly testing their games. It pains me greatly to say this, but I will have to wait and deliberate before casting my judgement on games like:

Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Grand Theft Auto 4 (PC), Call Of Duty: World at War, Far Cry 2, The New Prince of Persia, and Mirrors Edge. Some of which I will give previews of later. That said however, there is one game that I CAN attest has been well manufactured and produced: Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Before I begin telling you why I love this latest incarnation of an old dog, let me start with why I hated the series last few attempts to snag me. First, the game play blew… I cannot put it simpler or more honestly… Not only did moving and navigating puzzles require some kind of exacting, cyborg, millimeter counting OCD to handle, but when you actually gave in and tried to use “strategy” to progress, you’d get fragged by the games jittery camera or shitty fighting system.

Well, needless to say, that is not the case in this Tomb Raider. The games focus is on heroine’s journey to, I believe, find her mother. Now I say “I believe” Because to be honest, I’m not entirely sure… Like I said before, I hated the last games, so I’m not up on my Tomb Raider lore… Still the game plays incredibly well, and is doing it’s best to fill in parts of the story as it progresses. As platforming/adventure games are not my forte, I’m playing on medium difficulty (Called, get this, “Tomb Raider” skill level) and am progressing quicker than I expected.

First the game is offered on steam, which is always a plus in my book, since this makes it easier to download and install, that +1 point right off the bat.

Secondly, and actually perhaps least importantly, Lara Croft is looking HOTT, better than she has Tomb Raider 2, +1 point.

Third, as I said before, the game doesnt suffer from horrible game-play mechanics, well it does but at least they seem mild when compared to previous versions, +2 points.

Most importantly however, this game is just friggin gorgeous. Utilizing the new directx 10 video cards…. It’s just incredible, here, look for yourself:

The visuals in this game are stunning... Yeah Thats Really Gameplay!

The visuals in this game are stunning... Yeah Thats Really Gameplay!

So with another +4 point for it’s graphics, overall Tomb Raider: Underworld scores an 8/10, not bad given that I’d grown to dread this series.
